Did you know that binoculars were invented soon after the telescope in the 17th century? Combining two identical telescopes and aligning them together allows the viewer to use both eyes to view distant objects.

There are many types of binoculars available on the market today. Choosing the wrong option can be a costly and regrettable mistake.

Continue reading to learn about the five best binoculars and when to use them.

Roof Prism Binoculars

This is one of the two most common styles, boasting a slim and stylish design. The roof prism system is virtually straight from the optical path to the eyepiece, allowing the binoculars to be more compact and lightweight than their counterparts.

Although they may look simplistic on the outside, manufacturing roof prism binoculars requires complex technology. A good pair can be quite costly.

Roof prism binoculars are ideal for bird watching, spotting wildlife, and sporting events.

Porro Prism Binoculars

The other most common style of binoculars is porro prism. Developed by Ignazio Porro in the 19th century, these were the first set of modern binoculars.

For this style, the optical path and the eyepiece are not aligned. Instead, images are transported to the viewer visa a horizontal jag.

These are more cumbersome than roof prism binoculars, but they’re also cheaper to manufacture due to their more straightforward design. They can also offer a more precise image as well as a greater field of view.

Porro prism binoculars are also appropriate for bird watching, spotting wildlife, and sporting events.

Marine Binoculars

These are specifically designed for water environments. Marine Binoculars are often waterproof and more robust than the two prism options.

Marine Binoculars have a larger field of view with a reduced magnification. On a moving boat, this can assist viewers in maintaining a steady image. If you want to know more, have a look at this comprehensive guide to marine binoculars.

Night Vision Binoculars

Regular binoculars become useless companions when there’s a lack of light. Night vision binoculars electrically amplify whatever light is available through a series of photon-enhancing components. They convert thermal energy into useable images, creating a glowing green visual that allows you to see in the dark.

A set of night vision binoculars come in handy for nighttime surveillance, hunting, and survival exercises.

Astronomy Binoculars

These binoculars are specifically designed to explore the stars. They boast huge magnifications to focus more deeply and bigger objective lenses that can take in extreme amounts of light.

Telescopes are more effective in astronomy, but binoculars can give you a wider field of view.

Many Types of Binoculars for Many Occasions

Zooming binoculars come in many forms. The two most common options employ prisms to invert the image for your eye. But there are more binocular types for those looking for something more specific.
